Dear Parent/Guardian,
My name is Alicia Cergnul and I am the art teacher at Addams and Upton Elementary School. It is my pleasure to welcome you and your child to my classroom. I look forward to a rewarding year as we explore various techniques, artists, media, and art history. To tell you a bit about myself, I grew up in South Bend, Indiana and moved to Michigan in 2009. Since then, my husband and I welcomed a beautiful baby girl and boy into our family. My daughter is now three and a half years old and my son is twenty months.
As an art educator, I value progress over product. Art in my classroom is taught progressively, in which skills are built on previous skills. For example, in the future you may notice your child making a paper weaving in second grade and then creating a more detailed yarn weaving in the 4th grade. I have learned that this method helps students progress in the arts, which improves the result of the art piece. Art class is divided into 3 parts: art learning, art making, and clean-up/reflection. Please be patient, students have art once a week for a 50 minute class period and some projects take many classes to complete.
Our school is a member of Artsonia (www.artsonia.com), the largest online student art museum. Last year we introduced grades 3-5 to the program. Students in grades 3-5 uploaded over 2,000 art pieces at Addams and Upton Elementary School. Last year, one of our third graders at Upton was nominated for Artist of the Week. Due to high participation last year, I will be extending the use of Artsonia to kindergarten thru second grade.
Also, I will continue to communicate using my website: www.artataddamsandupton.weebly.com.

Alicia Cergnul
